Wnt2b also known as Wingless-type MMTV integration site family member 2B plays a mechanical role as a ligand in the Wnt signaling pathway. The protein weighs around 41 kDa and is expressed in various tissues including the brain lung and reproductive organs. As a signaling molecule Wnt2b binds to receptor complexes on cell surfaces initiating intracellular signaling cascades that regulate cellular processes.
The Wnt2b protein influences embryonic development and cell fate decisions. It engages in cellular proliferation differentiation and migration. Wnt2b is a component of the Wnt signaling protein family known for forming signaling complexes with Frizzled receptors. Its role in establishing cell polarity and maintaining stem cell pluripotency makes it important for tissue development and repair.
Wnt2b contributes to Wnt/β-catenin and non-canonical Wnt signaling pathways. Wnt/β-catenin signaling is vital for gene transcription regulation where Wnt2b partners with proteins like β-catenin and Axin to modulate these pathways. Non-canonical Wnt signaling impacts cellular architecture and movement without involving β-catenin linking Wnt2b to other proteins through alternative signaling routes.
Wnt2b-related disruptions often tie to cancer and bone density disorders. Aberrant Wnt2b expression connects to cancers such as colorectal cancer linking it with other related Wnt family members and tumor suppressor proteins like APC. Alterations in Wnt2b's function may also associate with bone density disorders by affecting osteoblast differentiation with implications for conditions like osteoporosis.
