Wnt5b also known as wingless-type MMTV integration site family member 5B is a protein that is part of the Wnt family. It has a mass of approximately 42 kilodaltons. Wnt5b is expressed in various tissues notably in marmoset and human prostate tissue. It acts as a signaling molecule involving in cell communication processes such as cell fate determination proliferation and migration.
Wnt5b is involved in the regulation of embryonic development and is part of a non-canonical Wnt signaling pathway. It does not form a direct signaling complex but interacts with other proteins to execute its function. Wnt5b has a role in the modulation of cell polarity and movement being important for maintaining the structural integrity of tissues and the developmental processes.
Wnt5b plays a role in the planar cell polarity pathway and the Wnt/Ca2+ pathway. It connects to proteins like Dishevelled and Calcium/Calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) acting to regulate intracellular calcium levels and influence cytoskeletal rearrangement. These pathways are critical for several aspects of cellular function including embryogenesis and tissue maintenance.
Wnt5b is associated with the development and progression of certain cancers including prostate cancer. Changes in Wnt5b signaling can disrupt cell-to-cell communication and lead to tumor growth. Additionally links exist between Wnt5b and other proteins such as beta-catenin in the context of cancer. Understanding these connections can offer insights into potential therapeutic strategies aimed at modulating Wnt5b activity to treat disease.
