Biological function summary
The ZBRK1 protein plays a significant role in DNA damage response and cell cycle regulation. It often forms a complex with BRCA1 aiding in the repair of damaged DNA and maintaining genomic stability. This interaction suggests an involvement in regulating cell proliferation and preventing the accumulation of genetic mutations that could otherwise lead to oncogenic transformation. ZBRK1's ability to repress transcription of certain genes ensures controlled cell growth and division.
Pathways
ZBRK1 is integrally involved in the DNA damage response pathway and the p53 signaling pathway. In the DNA damage response pathway ZBRK1 works alongside BRCA1 to repair double-strand breaks through homologous recombination a critical process for maintaining genetic fidelity. Within the p53 signaling pathway ZBRK1 influences the expression levels of genes involved in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis relating it to proteins such as p21 which mediates cell cycle inhibition.
