Supplementary information

ZC3H11A also known as zinc finger CCCH-type containing 11A is a protein encoded by the ZC3H11A gene. With a molecular mass of approximately 97 kDa this protein can be found expressed in various tissues with elevated levels in the brain heart and liver. Mechanically ZC3H11A functions as an RNA-binding protein participating in interactions with mRNA molecules. It contains a zinc finger domain that facilitates its interactions with nucleic acids influencing RNA stability and processing.
Biological function summary

This protein has a role in regulating mRNA stability and nuclear export. It often acts as a part of the larger mRNA export complex which includes other proteins that facilitate the transport of mRNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. By participating in the control of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level ZC3H11A contributes to cellular homeostasis and response to stress stimuli.

Pathways

This protein functions in the mRNA processing and transport pathways. It interacts with TREX (Transcription/Export) complex components such as Aly/REF export factor (ALYREF) to ensure proper mRNA export from the nucleus. ZC3H11A also integrates into the post-transcriptional gene regulation pathway aligning with proteins like THOC1 and THOC5 ensuring the precise control of gene expression by managing RNA fate within the cell.

Mutations or dysregulation of the ZC3H11A protein have implications in neurodegenerative diseases particularly those affecting mRNA processing and transport. For instance aberrant function of this protein has been studied in the context of Alzheimer's disease where RNA transport misregulation plays a role. ZC3H11A's connection to the THOC complex which is important in RNA metabolism links it to oncology where altered mRNA export mechanisms can contribute to cancer progression.

Target data

Through its association with TREX complex components, may participate in the export and post-transcriptional coordination of selected mRNA transcripts, including those required to maintain the metabolic processes in embryonic cells (PubMed : 22928037, PubMed : 37356722). Binds RNA (PubMed : 29610341, PubMed : 37356722).. (Microbial infection) Plays a role in efficient growth of several nuclear-replicating viruses such as HIV-1, influenza virus or herpes simplex virus 1/HHV-1. Required for efficient viral mRNA export (PubMed : 29610341). May be required for proper polyadenylation of adenovirus type 5/HAdV-5 capsid mRNA (PubMed : 37356722).
