Supplementary information

The ZFY protein also known as Zinc Finger Protein Y-linked is a transcription factor with a mass of approximately 69 kDa. It originates from the Y chromosome and is expressed mainly in male-specific tissues such as the testes. The protein contains C2H2-type zinc finger domains which facilitate its ability to bind DNA and modulate the transcription of specific genes. Its positioning on the Y chromosome links it directly to male-related biological processes.
Biological function summary

ZFY influences gene expression by binding to specific DNA sequences which impacts cellular development and differentiation. As a transcription factor it often works alone rather than as part of a larger complex. In certain contexts it plays a role in male sex determination and spermatogenesis suggesting its importance in regulating genes important for male germ cell development.

Pathways

ZFY plays a significant role in the sex differentiation pathway and spermatogenesis pathway. It interacts with other Y chromosome-encoded proteins like SRY which is important for initiating male sex determination. Moreover juxtaposing proteins such as SOX9 also engage in the pathways where ZFY exerts influence although ZFY mainly functions independently.

ZFY has connections with infertility in males and certain sex chromosome disorders. Researchers link defects or aberrant expression of ZFY to male infertility due to its critical role in spermatogenesis. Additionally it associates with Turner’s syndrome when aberrations in its expression occur highlighting its interaction with other Y chromosome-related proteins including TSPY.
