Supplementary information

Zmat2 also known as Zinc finger matrin-type protein 2 plays a role in RNA processing. This protein has a mass of approximately 37 kDa. It shows expression in most tissues with higher levels in certain areas of the brain and reproductive organs. The protein contains a zinc finger domain which facilitates binding to RNA and possibly other molecular components suggesting its involvement in cellular processes requiring precise regulation.
Biological function summary

Zmat2 influences the maturation and modification of mRNA. It serves as part of the spliceosome complex which is responsible for the splicing of pre-mRNA and is essential for the regulation of gene expression. Zmat2 contributes to the appropriate removal of introns and joining of exons ensuring the production of functional RNA transcripts. Its actions are important for the maintenance of cellular function and response to environmental cues.

Pathways

Several components in the RNA splicing machinery are associated with Zmat2. Among these the spliceosome assembly and mRNA surveillance pathways are notably significant. Zmat2 works in conjunction with PRPF8 and several small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) which are necessary for the assembly of the spliceosomal complex. These interactions ensure effective and reliable mRNA processing and turnover.

Abnormal functioning of Zmat2 may have a connection with certain neurological conditions. Disruption in RNA splicing can lead to the accumulation of faulty proteins potentially resulting in diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and some neurodegenerative disorders. The involvement of Zmat2 in pathways with other proteins like FUS and TDP-43 which are linked to these conditions highlights its importance in maintaining neural health.
