The biological targets 'Collagen I' and 'Collagen II' play important mechanical roles in the body. Also known as collagen alpha chains these proteins are integral structural components. Collagen I typically forms fibers in tendon bone skin and organs while Collagen II is important for hyaline cartilage. Collagen I has a molecular weight of around 300 kDa and Collagen II measures approximately 250 kDa. These collagens are expressed widely in connective tissues where they provide tensile strength and support. The alpha chains form a triple helix structure that is integral to tissue integrity.
These collagen types are indispensable in maintaining the extracellular matrix. Collagen I and II are part of larger collagen complexes that provide mechanical support and contribute to tissue repair processes. Collagen I is mainly found in dermis and bones contributing to skin elasticity and bone strength. Collagen II predominantly resides in cartilage and serves as an essential element for cartilage function facilitating smooth joint movement.
Both collagen types have significant roles. They are involved in the TGF-beta signaling pathway which is critically involved in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. The collagen alpha chains interact with other proteins like fibronectin influencing the integrin-mediated signaling pathway as well. This interaction affects cellular adhesion and movement impacting overall tissue development and repair.
Aberrant Collagen I and II can lead to significant conditions. Osteogenesis imperfecta often linked to Collagen I defects results in brittle bones due to inadequate collagen fiber formation. Dysfunctional Collagen II is associated with chondrodysplasias impacting cartilage and bone development leading to skeletal abnormalities. Both conditions connect to enzymes like matrix metalloproteinases which play roles in collagen breakdown and are key elements in disease exacerbation.
