Activity summary

Osmotin-like protein OSM34 also known simply as OSM34 belongs to the pathogenesis-related protein family. It exhibits a molecular mass of roughly 34 kDa. One typically finds OSM34 expressed in plant tissues specifically in leaves stems and roots. As a defense protein OSM34 responds to environmental stresses such as drought salinity and pathogen attack. This protein shares a similar structure with osmotin which also plays a role in plant response systems.

Biological function summary

OSM34 functions to enhance plant defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stresses. It acts by inducing cellular changes that improve the plant's ability to tolerate adverse conditions. OSM34 participates in signaling pathways responsible for regulating stress responses although its direct involvement in a protein complex is not extensively documented. Its activity contributes to strengthening the plant cell wall and inhibiting pathogen progress which helps protect the plant.

Pathways

OSM34 plays an important role in the plant defense signaling network. It is involved in the salicylic acid pathway which is important for pathogen defense. This protein often works alongside related proteins like PR-5 and osmotin to mediate resistance to specific pathogens. Additionally OSM34 interacts within the jasmonic acid signaling pathway which regulates plant responses to both insect herbivory and pathogen attack.

Associated diseases and disorders

Plants expressing OSM34 show increased resistance to fungal infections and stress-related disorders. In particular OSM34 helps defend against pathogens such as Fusarium oxysporum which causes wilts and other plant diseases. Another related protein osmotin also contributes to this defensive response. Mutual expression of these proteins often enhances the plant's ability to resist stress-induced diseases promoting overall plant health and yield.
