Apoptin also known as Chicken Anemia Virus Protein is a small protein with a mass of approximately 13.8 kDa. It expresses in various cell types including both normal and transformed cells. However Apoptin shows a unique ability to localize within the nucleus primarily in transformed cells. This nuclear localization is a critical feature as it is closely linked with its pro-apoptotic activity whereas in normal cells it remains in the cytoplasm rendering it inactive in these cells.
Biological function summary

Without the addition of other interacting proteins Apoptin initiates programmed cell death specifically in cancerous or transformed cells. It functions as a monomer and does not require a complex to exert its apoptotic effects.
