Allergen Fel d 4 also known as cat lipocalin is a protein allergen from domestic cats. This protein is about 23 kDa in mass and expressed in the saliva as well as the skin. When cats groom themselves Fel d 4 is transferred to fur and skin and then it becomes airborne making it easy to inhale by humans. Its mechanical function is closely linked to its ability to bind and transport small hydrophobic molecules similar to other lipocalins.
This protein acts as a member of the lipocalin family which plays roles in various transport functions including the transportation of pheromones and small hydrophobic molecules. Lipocalins often form complexes with other molecular structures to facilitate this transport. Fel d 4 shows particular affinity for binding volatile compounds which can influence both the behavior of cats and the allergenic response in humans.
Allergen Fel d 4 participates in processes that involve immune system interactions. It affects the signaling pathways that trigger allergic responses. As an allergen it interacts with immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in susceptible individuals. This interaction is a part of the allergic cascade that also involves related allergens such as Fel d 1 from cats contributing to the sensitization process in the immune system.
Exposure to Allergen Fel d 4 often links to respiratory conditions including asthma and allergic rhinitis. People with these conditions can have heightened immune responses to this allergen. In the process of these allergic reactions Fel d 4 interacts with IgE which is instrumental in mediating allergic symptoms. Understanding these interactions helps in developing treatments for managing cat allergy symptoms.
