Follistatin also known as FS or FST is a glycoprotein with an approximate mass of 32 kDa. This protein is part of the follistatin family and plays an important role in various physiological mechanisms. Follistatin synthesizes and secretes in different tissues including the liver gonads and skeletal muscles. It binds to and inhibits members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily particularly activin. This binding prevents activin from interacting with its receptors.

Follistatin modulates multiple processes such as cell growth differentiation and reproductive physiology. It acts as a binding protein for activin neutralizing its activity. By preventing activin from engaging with its receptor complexes follistatin influences developmental and regenerative processes.
