Biological function summary
The p24 protein functions as part of the Gag polyprotein a precursor that is cleaved to form several components of the viral particle including matrix capsid and nucleocapsid proteins. This protein is considered essential for the maturation process of the virus enabling the virus to become infectious. It contributes to the formation of the mature viral core which requires precise cleavage of the Gag polyprotein. This cleavage allows the virus to effectively infect host cells and propagate within an organism.
Pathways
The HTLV I p24 protein interacts significantly in the viral replication and assembly pathways. It is involved in the virion assembly pathway which is important for generating new infectious viral particles. Key interactions within these pathways include related proteins such as matrix and nucleocapsid proteins also derived from the Gag polyprotein. These components collectively facilitate the budding process from the host cell membrane leading to the release of virions that can infect new cells.

General info
Function
Gag polyprotein. The matrix domain targets Gag, Gag-Pro and Gag-Pro-Pol polyproteins to the plasma membrane via a multipartite membrane binding signal, that includes its myristoylated N-terminus.. Matrix protein p19. Matrix protein.. Capsid protein p24. Forms the spherical core of the virus that encapsulates the genomic RNA-nucleocapsid complex.. Nucleocapsid protein p15-gag. Binds strongly to viral nucleic acids and promote their aggregation. Also destabilizes the nucleic acids duplexes via highly structured zinc-binding motifs.
Post-translational modifications
Gag polyprotein. Specific enzymatic cleavages by the viral protease yield mature proteins. The polyprotein is cleaved during and after budding, this process is termed maturation.. Matrix protein p19. Phosphorylation of the matrix protein p19 by MAPK1 seems to play a role in budding.. Gag polyprotein. Ubiquitinated by host NEDD4.. Gag polyprotein. Myristoylated. Myristoylation of the matrix (MA) domain mediates the transport and binding of Gag polyproteins to the host plasma membrane and is required for the assembly of viral particles.
