Activity summary

CCL27 also known as CTACK (cutaneous T cell-attracting chemokine) is a chemokine that plays a critical role in skin immune surveillance. It has a mass of approximately 10 kDa. CCL27 is expressed in keratinocytes which are the predominant cells in the epidermis. It is also secreted by cells in inflamed skin. Researchers often use ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) techniques to study CCL27 due to its importance in skin immunology.

Biological function summary

CCL27 attracts T cells to the skin's surface facilitating immune responses. Although not part of a larger complex CCL27 interacts with its receptor CCR10 on T cells directing them to skin sites where they can perform immune surveillance and respond to pathogens. This chemokine-receptor interaction is essential for maintaining skin homeostasis and effective immune responses.

Pathways

The role of CCL27 gets significant attention in the CCR10-CTACK axis which is pivotal in the cutaneous immune system's functioning. Additionally the CCL27/CCR10 pathway has connections to the wider chemokine signaling network that regulates leukocyte trafficking. Through these associations CCL27 is connected to other chemokines and receptors including CCL28 which also shares CCR10 as a receptor highlighting the integrated nature of chemokine function in immune pathways.

Associated diseases and disorders

CCL27 has been linked to various skin conditions such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In psoriasis CCL27 recruits CCR10-expressing T cells to the skin aggravating the inflammatory response. Similarly in atopic dermatitis increased CCL27 levels may contribute to disease pathology by attracting immune cells that perpetuate inflammation. Understanding the interaction between CCL27 and these conditions may offer insight into potential therapeutic targets aimed at modulating chemokine signaling to alleviate symptoms.
