CGREF1 also known as Cell Growth Regulator with EF-Hand Domain 1 is a protein involved in cellular processes. It has a mass of approximately 33 kDa. CGREF1 is expressed in various tissues with considerable presence in the placenta and certain areas of the brain. Mechanically the protein contributes to cell adhesion and cell growth regulation possibly by interacting with other cell surface molecules and intracellular signaling pathways.
CGREF1 is essential in maintaining cellular adhesion particularly in epithelial cells. It forms part of a larger complex involving calcium ions which are necessary for its adhesion-promoting activity. The ability of CGREF1 to foster stable intercellular connections supports tissue integrity and cellular communication. It may also influence the cell cycle and modulate cell proliferation.
CGREF1 is linked with pathways involved in cell adhesion and signaling. A notable pathway includes the cell-cell adhesion pathway which integrates with cellular signaling to coordinate responses to cellular and environmental cues. CGREF1 may interact with proteins such as cadherins which are integral to adhesion processes and signal transduction.
CGREF1's role in cellular adhesion connects it to potential implications in cancer and developmental abnormalities. Aberrant expression or dysfunction of CGREF1 might contribute to metastasis in cancers by disrupting normal cell adhesion. Additionally its interaction with proteins like E-cadherin could play a part in disease pathology where alteration of adhesion and signaling pathways can lead to tumor progression and other disorders.
