Biological function summary
The SARS E2 protein functions in the assembly of virions and is part of a larger viral protein complex. This protein is involved in the regulation of the host's intracellular membrane trafficking which impacts viral replication and release. The E2 protein exhibits ion channel activity known as a viroporin influencing various host cellular processes including stress response and apoptosis.
Pathways
The SARS E2 protein interacts with early endosomal and Golgi pathways which are critical for viral trafficking within the host cell. It shares functional relations with other SARS coronavirus proteins such as the M (membrane) and S (spike) proteins. These interactions allow the virus to efficiently package and release infectious particles. The E2 protein also influences pathways associated with inflammation and immune evasion contributing to the virus's ability to persist and cause disease.
