CTAGE1 also known as CTAGE5 is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 120 kDa. It operates as a transmembrane protein involved in processes such as protein trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. Its expression occurs in various tissues but it is notably present in testis and certain cancerous tissues. This restricted expression pattern makes it a subject of particular interest in cancer research.
CTAGE1 plays a role in intracellular transport and modulates protein sorting. It associates with components of the cellular export machinery although it is not established as a part of an active complex. The protein acts at cellular junctions where vesicles bud off from the endoplasmic reticulum indicating its potential involvements in ensuring the proper transport and localization of specific proteins.
CTAGE1 integrates into the secretory pathway influencing the transportation of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi. This involvement connects it with proteins such as Sar1 and Sec23 which are similarly implicated in vesicle trafficking processes. Through these interactions CTAGE1 plays an important role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and supporting the function of the endomembrane system.
CTAGE1 has an established connection to cancer particularly certain melanoma and lung cancer. This link suggests its potential importance as a biomarker or therapeutic target in these conditions. Within the context of cancer it interacts with proteins like cancer testis antigens which are often expressed aberrantly in tumors. Understanding these interactions aids researchers in deciphering tumor biology and could guide future therapeutic strategies.
