Belongs to the beta-defensin family.
DEFB127 also known as Beta-defensin 127 is a small antimicrobial peptide with a mass of approximately 11.3 kDa. It belongs to the defensin family and contributes to innate immune responses. Expressed in various tissues including the epididymis DEFB127 plays an important role in protecting against microbial infections. With its ability to directly disrupt the integrity of microbial cell membranes it effectively helps control infections.
DEFB127 contributes to the host defense mechanism by exerting antimicrobial actions against a broad spectrum of pathogens such as bacteria and fungi. Part of the defensin family DEFB127 acts independently rather than within a complex. It interacts directly with microbial membranes leading to their disruption and eventual cell death. This activity supports a more robust immune response by preventing infection propagation.
DEFB127 participates in the innate immune response pathways and antimicrobial humoral response pathways. It plays a supportive role alongside other defensins like DEFB1 and DEFB4A. Together these defensins contribute to a coordinated immune defense strategy by reinforcing the physical barriers against microbial intruders and maintaining immune system integrity.
DEFB127 has connections to conditions involving compromised mucosal immunity such as cystic fibrosis and chronic periodontitis. Reduced expression or functionality of DEFB127 can lead to a weakened immune barrier making tissues more susceptible to persistent infections. This protein shares associations with CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator) in cystic fibrosis where impaired DEFB127 function can exacerbate disease symptoms and severity.
