ERMAP also known as erythroblast membrane-associated protein is a 45 kDa protein found in humans. It functions mechanically as a cell surface glycoprotein. This protein is located mainly on erythroid tissues and is largely absent from non-erythroid cells. ERMAP is important for cell adhesion as it interacts with other membrane proteins to help maintain cell stability and function. The protein serves as a structural component and helps in cellular communication processes necessary for erythrocyte function.
Biological function summary

The erythroblast membrane-associated protein facilitates critical cellular processes in the development and maturation of red blood cells. It forms part of a larger protein complex on the erythrocyte surface coordinating with other adhesion molecules. This coordination helps in mediating interactions between developing red blood cells and other cells in bone marrow. Through these interactions ERMAP influences the survival and differentiation pathways required for the production of functional erythrocytes.

Pathways

ERMAP plays a role in the red blood cell development and maturation pathway. It works alongside proteins such as band 3 and Rh-associated glycoprotein contributing to the structural integrity necessary for erythrocyte functionality. Additionally ERMAP influences the adhesion-mediated signaling pathways that guide erythroblast differentiation. By interacting with β-1 integrins ERMAP participates in signal transduction that prompts essential cellular responses.

Altered ERMAP function affects red blood cell-related conditions such as anemia and hereditary spherocytosis. In these conditions improper expression or mutations in ERMAP can disrupt the normal development and elasticity of red blood cells. This disruption leads to decreased erythrocyte lifespan and increased hemolysis. ERMAP is also studied alongside proteins like ankyrin and spectrin as errors in these associated proteins also contribute to similar hematological disorders.
