Supplementary information

GCC1 also known as Golgi coiled-coil protein 1 is a protein with a mass of approximately 82 kDa. It mainly localizes to the Golgi apparatus and plays a significant role in the Golgi structure and function. GCC1 engages with various proteins to support Golgi cisternal stacking and maintenance of Golgi morphology. It is expressed in multiple tissues with higher expression levels detected in organs with secretory functions.
Biological function summary

GCC1 interacts within protein complexes that govern the trafficking and sorting of proteins through the Golgi apparatus. It contributes to the regulation of retrograde transport moving proteins from the Golgi back to the endoplasmic reticulum. GCC1 partners with Rab GTPases which are vital for vesicle formation and cargo recognition therefore facilitating efficient intracellular transport and processing.

Pathways

GCC1 participates in critical cellular processes including the Golgi-to-ER retrograde transport and the broader protein secretion pathway. It works closely with proteins such as Rab6 which is necessary for the regulation of this pathway. Through these interactions GCC1 ensures optimal function and communication between cellular compartments involved in the secretory process.

GCC1 has associations with conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Aberrant expression or mutation of GCC1 may contribute to Golgi fragmentation which has been observed in various neurological disorders. Additionally GCC1 interactions with proteins like SNAREs may have implications in tumorigenesis as defects in vesicular transport can influence cancer progression.
