Biological function summary
Like-Sm protein 4 plays an important role in RNA processing particularly in mRNA splicing and degradation. It forms part of the LSm1-7 complex which associates with the U6 snRNA to regulate the splicing mechanisms necessary for proper gene expression. By ensuring accurate mRNA splicing LSM4 contributes to the maintenance of cellular function and homeostasis.
Pathways
LSM4's involvement in RNA splicing positions it within the spliceosome pathway essential for processing pre-mRNA into mature mRNA. Through this pathway it collaborates with other LSm proteins and the DEAD-box helicase DDX41. LSM4 also has a role in the RNA decay pathway where it interacts with the XRN1 protein facilitating the turnover of mRNA to control gene expression levels in cells.

General info
Function
Plays a role in pre-mRNA splicing as component of the U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP complex that is involved in spliceosome assembly, and as component of the precatalytic spliceosome (spliceosome B complex) (PubMed : 28781166). The heptameric LSM2-8 complex binds specifically to the 3'-terminal U-tract of U6 snRNA (PubMed : 10523320).
Sequence similarities
Belongs to the snRNP Sm proteins family.
