Biological function summary
Muted influences important cellular functions by forming part of the biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex-1 (BLOC-1). This complex which includes eight subunits is vital for the generation of lysosome-related organelles such as melanosomes and platelet-dense granules. Muted's role in the complex affects the specialized organelles essential for pigmentation and other related cellular processes. Without proper functioning of BLOC-1 various cellular activities reliant on functional organelles face impairment.
Pathways
Muted and other molecules participate in the endosomal-lysosomal pathway and the melanosome biogenesis pathway. These pathways are important for the formation of lysosome-related organelles. Alongside proteins like Pallidin and Cappuccino Muted influences the movement and formation of vesicles required for transporting cargos to their destination within cells. Proper coordination within these pathways ensures cellular components reach the right location influencing pigmentation and other cell-specific functions.

General info
Function
Component of the BLOC-1 complex, a complex that is required for normal biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles (LRO), such as platelet dense granules and melanosomes (PubMed : 32565547). In concert with the AP-3 complex, the BLOC-1 complex is required to target membrane protein cargos into vesicles assembled at cell bodies for delivery into neurites and nerve terminals. The BLOC-1 complex, in association with SNARE proteins, is also proposed to be involved in neurite extension. Plays a role in intracellular vesicle trafficking.
Sequence similarities
Belongs to the BLOC1S5 family.
