Activity summary

NANOGP8 also known as NANOG pseudogene 8 is a retrogene with a molecular mass of approximately 35 kDa. It originates from the NANOG gene which is important for maintaining pluripotency in stem cells. NANOGP8 is generally not expressed in normal tissues but is found in various cancerous tissues and cancer stem cells. Its expression pattern suggests a role in abnormal cell growth and differentiation.

Biological function summary

NANOGP8 is involved in processes that regulate cell proliferation and differentiation. It does not form part of any known protein complex but shares functional characteristics with NANOG. NANOGP8 contributes to maintaining the undifferentiated state and self-renewal capacity of cancer stem cells giving rise to its increased expression in tumors.

Pathways

NANOGP8 interacts with cellular pathways involving pluripotency and differentiation. It plays a role in pathways that include Wnt and Hedgehog which are critical for cell cycle regulation and development. NANOGP8's activity relates to proteins such as β-catenin (in Wnt pathways) and GLI family zinc finger proteins (in Hedgehog pathways) which are vital in controlling cell fate and patterning during development.

Associated diseases and disorders

NANOGP8 shows strong associations with various cancers including colorectal and prostate cancer. NANOGP8's expression in tumors links it to pathways involving other important proteins like p53 known for its tumor suppressor functions and c-MYC which is implicated in cell proliferation and growth. Its study in these contexts may offer insights into cancer progression and resistance to therapy.
