Neuroglobin often referred to as Ngb is a globin protein with a molecular mass of approximately 17 kDa. It is present mainly in the nervous system including the brain and retina. Ngb functions mechanically by binding oxygen and other gaseous molecules. Unlike other globins it has a hexacoordinate heme and switches between different redox states. This property allows Ngb to participate in molecular signaling and oxygen homeostasis. Neuroglobin's expression occurs in neurons glial cells and some peripheral tissues suggesting a specialized yet wide-ranging role in cellular environments.

The ferrous/deoxygenated form exhibits a nitrite reductase activity and it could produce nitric oxide which in turn inhibits cellular respiration in response to hypoxia (PubMed : 21296891).
