Neurotensin also known by the abbreviation NT is a peptide neurotransmitter that consists of 13 amino acids giving it a relatively modest mass. It is well-known under the name NTS and is mainly expressed in the central nervous system especially within the hypothalamus midbrain and also found in peripheral tissues like the gastrointestinal tract. Neurotensin acts by binding to specific G-protein-coupled receptors such as NTSR1 to mediate its effects.
The peptide neurotransmitter exhibits various functions in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It can act as a neuromodulator affecting dopamine signaling and impacts the regulation of pain temperature and even food intake. Neurotensin forms part of complexes with other neurotransmitters and interacts closely with pathways related to dopamine suggesting a significant influence on mood and cognition.
The interaction of neurotensin with dopamine pathways is particularly important. It plays a role in modulating the dopaminergic signaling cascades that involve receptor proteins like D2 dopamine receptors. Additionally neurotensin impacts the acute-phase response pathway altering the signaling dynamics in inflammation and immune response.
Neurotensin has connections to conditions such as schizophrenia and obesity. Its modulation of dopamine pathways links it to schizophrenia where altered dopamine signaling is evident with potential involvement of proteins like NTSR1 and D2 receptors. Additionally because neurotensin influences food intake and energy balance it relates to obesity with its effects mediated through interactions with other gut-derived peptides and receptors including ghrelin and leptin receptors.
