Biological function summary
BP30 exerts antimicrobial effects by interfering with bacterial iron acquisition limiting bacterial growth and proliferation. It is not part of a complex; rather it functions as a monomer although it can form complexes with siderophores. Beyond its antimicrobial role BP30 also participates in cellular processes like apoptosis and inflammation. Its presence in various tissues points to its function as more systemically involved in defense mechanisms.

BP30 interacts with several important biological pathways including the innate immune response and iron metabolism. Within the innate immune pathway it works alongside other antimicrobial peptides and proteins to enhance the body's first line of defense against pathogens. Function
The cytotoxic action of BPI is limited to many species of Gram-negative bacteria; this specificity may be explained by a strong affinity of the very basic N-terminal half for the negatively charged lipopolysaccharides that are unique to the Gram-negative bacterial outer envelope. Has antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacterium P.aeruginosa, this activity is inhibited by LPS from P.aeruginosa.
