Functions as a transport protein in the blood stream. Binds various hydrophobic ligands in the interior of its beta-barrel domain. Also binds synthetic drugs and influences their distribution and availability. Appears to function in modulating the activity of the immune system during the acute-phase reaction.

Orosomucoid 2 also known as Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein 2 is a serum glycoprotein with a molecular mass of approximately 41 kDa. The protein is expressed mainly in the liver but it is also present in macrophages and other tissues. It serves primarily as an acute-phase protein during inflammation and other stress responses indicating changes in the concentrations in the blood plasma. Researchers often study it in correlation with Orosomucoid 1 due to the similar roles of these two proteins in the body.
Orosomucoid 2 involves itself in the modulation of the immune response and drug binding. It binds many drugs and endogenous compounds influencing their bioavailability and activity. As part of the extracellular matrix it interacts with other proteins and structures in the body. The glycosylation of Orosomucoid 2 impacts its binding properties which allows it to react to physiological changes. It does not typically function as part of a larger protein complex.
Orosomucoid 2 participates in the acute-phase response and immune system pathways. Its role in the acute-phase response helps regulate inflammation by modulating cytokine activity and leukocyte function. The protein interacts with cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-alpha which are part of these pathways. Orosomucoid 2 also indirectly influences the metabolism and detoxification pathways through its binding capacity and transport of insoluble compounds in the circulatory system.
Orosomucoid 2 associates with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. In rheumatoid arthritis elevated levels of the protein correlate with inflammation severity playing a part in monitoring disease progression. The protein's interaction with CRP (C-reactive protein) and its involvement in the inflammatory process also links it to inflammatory bowel disease where it can serve as a marker for disease activity. The protein's concentration levels often reflect the presence and intensity of inflammation in these diseases.
