Biological function summary
6-phosphogluconolactonase plays a role in cellular metabolism by ensuring the smooth progression of the pentose phosphate pathway. This pathway is important for the production of NADPH which acts as a reducing agent in several biosynthetic reactions. PGLS does not form part of a multiprotein complex but serves a singular enzymatic role essential for maintaining cellular redox state.
Pathways
The pentose phosphate pathway lies at the center of PGLS's function in its role of maintaining NADPH levels for reductive biosynthesis and protection against oxidative stress. In this pathway PGLS closely associates with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) which provides the substrate for PGLS. Both play a sequential role in the oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway influencing cellular processes such as fatty acid synthesis and ribose-5-phosphate production.
