PI4K2A also known as phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase type 2 alpha is an enzyme involved in phospholipid signaling. It catalyzes the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol (PI) to generate phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI4P). This enzyme is part of the PI4K family and typically has a mass of approximately 55 kDa. PI4K2A is primarily expressed in brain tissue but can also be found in other tissues such as heart and liver.
Biological function summary

PI4K2A plays a significant role in cellular processes through its involvement in phosphoinositide turnover. It contributes to the synthesis of membrane phospholipids and helps regulate vesicle trafficking. PI4K2A functions as part of larger protein complexes involved in generating PI4P a precursor for producing phosphatidylinositol 45-bisphosphate (PI(45)P2) which is critical for various signaling pathways.

Membrane-bound phosphatidylinositol-4 kinase (PI4-kinase) that catalyzes the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol (PI) to phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI4P), a lipid that plays important roles in endocytosis, Golgi function, protein sorting and membrane trafficking and is required for prolonged survival of neurons. Besides, phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol (PI) to phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI4P) is the first committed step in the generation of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2), a precursor of the second messenger inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3).
