Retinol Binding Protein 7 (RBP7) also known as CRBP4 belongs to the intracellular lipid-binding protein family. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 15 kDa. RBP7 is expressed in various tissues including adipose tissue kidney and heart among others. It plays a role in shuttling retinoids intracellularly facilitating the transport and availability of retinol.
Biological function summary

The function of RBP7 involves maintaining retinoid homeostasis by regulating the storage and release of retinol within cells. It does not appear to be part of a larger protein complex. RBP7 contributes to cellular differentiation and proliferation influencing processes related to cell growth. Its roles are important in maintaining tissue health especially relating to vision and epithelial integrity.

Pathways

RBP7 is involved in the retinoic acid signaling pathway and contributes to lipid metabolism processes. Within these pathways it interacts indirectly with proteins such as retinaldehyde dehydrogenases that convert retinol into active forms. These pathways highlight the link RBP7 has with both metabolic and signaling functions showing its role in broader physiological contexts.

Alterations in RBP7 expression or function associate with conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes. These alterations may affect retinoid pathways and consequently influence energy homeostasis and insulin sensitivity. Through its interactions in these pathways RBP7 shares connections with proteins such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) which also plays a role in metabolic regulation.
