REG1B also known as Regenerating islet-derived protein 1B is a small secretory protein with a molecular mass of approximately 18 kDa. This protein is expressed mainly in the pancreas with some expression noted in other tissues such as the gastrointestinal tract. It plays a role in the secretion and regulation of various cellular processes. REG1B belongs to the Reg family of proteins which function as lectins that bind to specific carbohydrate molecules.
Biological function summary

REG1B involves itself in pancreatic repair and regeneration. Its involvement in cell proliferation suggests that it plays a part in tissue recovery. REG1B is not typically part of a larger complex but it may interact with other proteins to carry out its function. Its presence has been noted during the regenerative processes in acinar cells of the pancreas following injury or stress proposing its participation in tissue defense mechanisms.

Pathways

The role of REG1B becomes evident in processes relating to pancreatic health and diabetes. It plays a role in the inflammatory and cellular stress response pathways. REG1B can also interact with other family members like REG1A to coordinate response activities contributing to cell signaling and regeneration potentially through modulation of local inflammation and cellular growth signals.

REG1B associates closely with conditions involving pancreatic disorders such as pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The protein might stimulate or inhibit cellular pathways that can contribute to the development or progression of these conditions. REG1B links to inflammatory process related proteins such as cytokines and its expression levels may change during disease progression indicating a potential biomarker role.

Function

Might act as an inhibitor of spontaneous calcium carbonate precipitation. May be associated with neuronal sprouting in brain, and with brain and pancreas regeneration.

Post-translational modifications

All O-linked glycans consist of Gal-GlcNAc-Gal-GalNAc tetrasaccharide core and get elongated (microheterogeneity).
