RPS18 also known as the Ribosomal Protein S18 is a component of the small 40S subunit of ribosomes. This protein is composed of 157 amino acids and its mass is approximately 17.5 kDa. RPS18 is ubiquitously expressed in many tissues and plays an essential role in the translation process by facilitating the assembly and structural stability of the ribosome. Due to its universal presence it serves as a marker for protein synthesis activity in various cellular contexts.
Biological function summary

RPS18 is involved in the production of proteins by participating in the mRNA translation process. As part of the ribosomal small subunit complex it interacts with ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and other ribosomal proteins to enable accurate decoding of mRNA sequences into polypeptides. This decoding is necessary for cellular growth and division making RPS18 indispensable for cell proliferation and maintenance.

Pathways

RPS18 is integrated into translational machinery and contributes directly to the mRNA translation pathway. This process is important for the synthesis of all proteins within a cell linking RPS18 to other translation-related proteins such as eukaryotic initiation factor 3 (eIF3). RPS18 also connects to the ribosome biogenesis pathway which is important for the assembly and upkeep of ribosomes ensuring efficient cellular function.

Aberrations in RPS18 expression or function have been associated with certain types of cancer such as colorectal cancer. Altered levels of RPS18 may influence cellular proliferation possibly in connection with dysregulated pathways involving proteins like beta-catenin known to be implicated in cancer progression. Additionally variations in RPS18 expression patterns have been linked to Diamond-Blackfan Anemia a disorder characterized by defective ribosome production and function. In this condition RPS18 alterations may impact the ribosomal protein networks including those involving RPS19 which is another protein related to the disease.
