Small breast epithelial mucin (SBEM) also known as HME1 is a glycoprotein with a mass of approximately 90 kDa. SBEM is predominantly expressed in breast tissue but also appears in salivary glands and lungs. The protein's expression is limited to mammary epithelial cells indicating a tissue-specific role. As a mucin SBEM is heavily glycosylated which plays a role in its mechanical function as it may be involved in cell adhesion and signal transduction.
