SGCE/ESG also known as epsilon-sarcoglycan is a protein that is important in forming components of the sarcoglycan complex. The SGCE/ESG protein has a mass of approximately 48 kDa. It is mainly expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues. Its localization in these muscles suggests an integral role in their structural stability and function.
Biological function summary

The SGCE/ESG protein contributes significantly to the integrity of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC). This complex is essential for maintaining the linkage between the cytoskeleton and the extracellular matrix providing mechanical stability to muscle cells during contraction and relaxation. SGCE/ESG is an essential component contributing to the structural organization and proper functioning of muscle fibers.

Pathways

SGCE/ESG is notably involved in the adhesion and signaling pathways within muscle cells. It plays a significant role in the dystroglycan and sarcoglycan complexes. These complexes interact with other proteins like dystrophin and beta-dystroglycan linking the extracellular matrix to the cytoskeleton and mediating signal transduction required for muscle function and repair.

SGCE/ESG mutations are associated with myoclonus-dystonia syndrome a neurological condition that affects movement and posture. The protein's dysfunction disrupts normal communication between muscle cells leading to symptoms characteristic of this disorder. Additionally SGCE/ESG has connections to limb-girdle muscular dystrophy where it interacts with sarcoglycan proteins that when mutated lead to muscle weakness and degeneration.
