TBCEL also known as Tubulin-folding cofactor E-like is a protein involved in tubulin dynamics. This protein has a mass of approximately 60 kDa and plays a role in the post-translational regulation of tubulin. TBCEL is expressed mainly in neuronal tissues where it influences the stability and disassembly of microtubules by targeting polyglutamylated tubulins. Through its action TBCEL regulates the cytoskeleton impacting cellular shape and organization.
Biological function summary

TBCEL participates in the regulation of microtubule networks important for cell division and intracellular transport. By controlling tubulin degradation TBCEL helps maintain proper microtubule levels within cells. Although not a member of a large complex TBCEL interacts with other microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) to facilitate the dynamic reorganization of the cytoskeleton important for cell movement and signaling.

Pathways

TBCEL contributes to the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and the regulation of cytoskeletal arrangements. In these pathways it interacts with proteins such as tubulin-folding cofactors and ubiquitin ligases. Through its modulatory role TBCEL affects microtubule stability and turnover linking it to cellular processes like mitosis and intracellular trafficking. By influencing these pathways TBCEL also indirectly affects protein transport and signal transduction.

TBCEL has associations with neurodegenerative conditions and certain types of cancer. Disrupted TBCEL function can lead to abnormal microtubule stabilization contributing to diseases like Alzheimer's where tau proteins are also implicated. Additionally alterations in TBCEL activity may relate to cancer progression with interactions involving proteins such as p53 highlighting its role in maintaining cellular integrity. Understanding TBCEL's functions can provide insights into targeting these disorders with therapeutic strategies.
