UBE2Q2 also known as Ubiquitin-Conjugating Enzyme E2 Q2 is a member of the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family with a molecular mass of approximately 48 kDa. It plays a mechanical role in the ubiquitination process by transferring activated ubiquitin from E1-carrying enzymes to target substrates tagging them for proteasomal degradation. This protein is widely expressed in various tissues including those in the brain liver and lungs.
UBE2Q2 contributes to protein homeostasis by participating in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway which maintains protein turnover within cells. It associates with E3 ligase complexes to select substrate specificity making it essential for regulating proteins related to cell cycle and growth. Research indicates its involvement in managing regulatory proteins that control cell division and apoptosis indicating its influence on cellular maintenance and stability.
Cellular growth and apoptosis processes involve UBE2Q2 in ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation pathways. It often collaborates with other ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes and E3 ligases such as CBL and NEDD4 focusing on protein quality control. The Wnt signaling pathway which is important for cell proliferation and differentiation also receives input from UBE2Q2 through its regulatory actions on beta-catenin turnover.
UBE2Q2 has connections to cancer development particularly colorectal and breast cancers. Aberrant expression or dysfunction of UBE2Q2 can lead to disrupted proteostasis and altered cellular signaling contributing to tumorigenesis. The oncogene CBL which interacts with UBE2Q2 is also implicated in these cancer types further highlighting UBE2Q2's role in cancer pathology.
