YKL-39 also known as Chitinase-3-like protein 2 is a member of the chitinase-like family of proteins with no enzymatic activity. This protein has a molecular weight of approximately 40 kDa. YKL-39 is mostly expressed in cartilage and actively secreted by chondrocytes the cells responsible for cartilage formation and maintenance. One can also detect lower levels of expression in other tissues including the synovium and skin indicating a potential role in joint health and skin biology.
Biological function summary

YKL-39 plays an important role in tissue remodeling and repair especially within the cartilage matrix. It does not form part of a large protein complex but interacts with other matrix proteins to help maintain structural integrity and support cellular responses to tissue damage. YKL-39 contributes to cell proliferation and has been found to affect inflammation pathways making it an important molecule in both normal physiological processes and in response to stress or injury.

Pathways

YKL-39 functions engage in critical roles within the extracellular matrix and inflammatory response pathways. Specifically it associates with the ECM as it relates to cartilage maintenance where it potentially interacts with other proteins such as YKL-40 another chitinase-like protein. YKL-39's involvement is significant in signaling cascades that mediate extracellular matrix homeostasis and modulate inflammation important for maintaining tissue structure and function.

YKL-39 relates closely to osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The elevated expression of YKL-39 in cartilage from osteoarthritic patients suggests its involvement in cartilage degeneration and joint inflammation. During these disease processes YKL-39 may exhibit an association with matrix metalloproteinases proteins involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix components. Understanding YKL-39's function enables researchers to explore potential therapeutic targets for cartilage-related conditions.
