Supplementary information

H3 (H3N2) also known as A/H3 influenza is an influenza A virus subtype. This target plays a mechanical role in the virus's entry into host cells. The hemagglutinin protein or HA which has a mass of approximately 84 kDa is expressed on the surface of the virus. HA binds to sialic acid receptors on host cell surfaces facilitating viral entry. Researchers often study this process to understand its structural adaptations and responses to immune pressures.
Biological function summary

The H3 influenza A subtype contributes to the seasonal influenza epidemics observed globally. Within the viral envelope HA acts alongside neuraminidase (NA) as part of the functional machinery required for viral replication and release from host cells. The HA a trimeric protein complex undergoes conformational changes which are critical to the virus infectivity and host range adaptation.

Pathways

The influenza A virus including the H3N2 subtype integrates into the host cell endocytic pathway upon cell entry. This viral host engagement is mediated by the HA protein interaction with cellular pathways that facilitate vesicular trafficking. During the virus life cycle the interaction between HA and the host immune response pathway is significant involving proteins such as M2 ion channel which helps in viral uncoating.

H3N2 influenza is a major cause of seasonal flu pandemics characterized by respiratory illness with varying severity. The HA protein within the H3N2 subtype plays an important role in vaccine design due to its antigenic properties. It is closely linked with neuraminidase in disease propagation making it a target for neuraminidase inhibitors used in treatment. Researchers aim to understand how structural variations in HA contribute to immune escape and vaccine efficacy.
