The major pollen allergen Lol p 5a also known as Lolium perenne group 5 allergen is a significant protein found in ryegrass pollen. This protein weighs around 28 kDa and is widely expressed in the pollen of the perennial ryegrass a common allergenic plant. It plays a mechanical role in pollen grain wall integrity and pollen-tube growth contributing to the reproductive success of the plant.
