Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 also known as FGF 23 is a hormone-like protein that plays a role in phosphate and vitamin D metabolism. It is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family and consists of about 251 amino acids with a mass of approximately 32 kDa. FGF 23 is predominantly expressed in bone cells especially osteocytes but it also appears in other tissues such as the thymus and brain. An important tool for quantitative measurement of FGF 23 levels is the FGF 23 ELISA kit which assists in various research and clinical settings.

Biological function summary

FGF 23 plays an important role in regulating phosphate balance in the body. It impacts the function of kidneys by decreasing the reabsorption of phosphate and suppressing the formation of active vitamin D thereby affecting calcium regulation as well. In Hypophosphatemic Rickets altered expression of FGF 23 causes excessive phosphate wasting whereas in CKD increased FGF 23 levels are associated with cardiovascular disease risk and deteriorating kidney function. Klotho as a coreceptor for FGF 23 also influences these pathological conditions highlighting its contribution to phosphate-related disorder mechanisms.
