K Cadherin also known as CDH6 K-Cadherin or Cadherin-6 is a protein that plays a significant mechanical role in cell adhesion. It belongs to the cadherin superfamily of proteins which are known for their role in calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. The CDH6 protein has an approximate molecular mass of 88 kDa. It is mainly expressed in the kidney brain and pancreas where it contributes to maintaining proper cellular architecture and signaling.
Biological function summary

Cadherin-6 is involved in the dynamic regulation of tissue morphogenesis and neural development. It interacts with intracellular catenins to form a cadherin-catenin complex which links to the actin cytoskeleton. This complex is essential for transmitting mechanical signals and maintaining cellular structure. CDH6 plays a critical role in branching morphogenesis and neuronal connectivity aiding in the formation of organized tissue architecture and neural networks.

Pathways

Cadherin-6 is a component of the Wnt signaling pathway which influences cell fate determination and patterning. CDH6 interacts with related proteins like beta-catenin facilitating the transduction of signals within the Wnt pathway. Additionally it is part of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) pathway where it influences cell migration and differentiation by interacting with growth factor receptors and downstream signaling molecules.

Dysregulation of cadherin-6 expression links to various cancers such as renal cell carcinoma and glioblastoma. In these contexts altered CDH6 levels can impact tumor progression and metastatic potential. Furthermore its interplay with proteins like E-cadherin and integrins affects cellular proliferation and invasion highlighting the importance of CDH6 in cancer biology.
