TC-2 also known as Transcription Complex 2 is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 45 kDa. It is widely expressed in the nucleus of various cell types especially in tissues with high transcriptional activity such as the liver and brain. As part of the transcription machinery TC-2 interacts with DNA influencing the expression of specific genes critical for cellular function.
This protein facilitates the assembly of transcriptional pre-initiation complexes. TC-2 serves as a scaffolding component connecting different transcription factors and RNA polymerase II essential for gene initiation. It operates as part of a larger multi-protein complex which synchronizes the gene transcription process integrating signals that impact gene expression.
TC-2 interacts extensively with gene regulation pathways such as the RNA polymerase II transcription pathway and the nuclear receptor signaling pathway. It is closely related to the protein transcription factor TBP in these pathways coordinating the transcription initiation process. These interactions highlight TC-2's role in the orchestration of gene expression through precise pathway integrations.
Abnormalities in TC-2 expression or function have been linked to certain cancers and neurological disorders. Aberrant expression of TC-2 can affect gene regulation contributing to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and schizophrenia. It often involves other proteins like the p53 tumor suppressor in cancer progression and neural activity modulators in brain-related diseases.
