The MPT64 protein also known as the Mycobacterium tuberculosis 64-kDa protein or Rv1980c is an immunogenic protein with a mass of around 24.7 kDa. It is secreted by Mycobacterium tuberculosis a bacterium responsible for the infectious disease tuberculosis (TB). MPT64 is expressed during the active replication stages of this pathogen playing a role in its life cycle. MPT64 is recognized by the host immune system which makes it an important marker in diagnostic tests for TB.
Biological function summary

MPT64 interacts with the host's immune cell processes impacting the ability of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to survive and persist in the host. MPT64 is part of a larger complex of secreted proteins that modulate the host's immune response aiding in the pathogen's evasion of immune detection. Through these mechanisms MPT64 contributes to the pathogen's virulence. The protein's activity is important in maintaining the infectious cycle by interfering with host defenses and sustaining bacterial growth and spread.

Pathways

MPT64's role in disrupting host immune pathways is significant for tuberculosis progression. It interacts primarily with host signaling pathways linked to the immune response. Although not many pathways are thoroughly mapped for MPT64 its interaction with proteins involved in the regulation of antigen processing and presentation is evident. Such interactions can affect how the immune system recognizes and eliminates Mycobacterium tuberculosis highlighting MPT64's role in immune evasion.

MPT64 is directly associated with tuberculosis a major global health issue. It is valuable both as a diagnostic target and as a predictor of active TB infection. Tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis involves MPT64 as an important factor in its pathogenesis. MPT64's connection with ESAT-6 another Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen highlights its involvement in immune system modulation and disease progression highlighting its significance in infectious disease research.
