Ribonuclease U2 also known as U2 RNase or RNase U2 is an enzyme that cleaves RNA molecules at specific sites generating 2’3’-cyclic phosphates and 5’-hydroxyl termini. This enzyme has a molecular mass of approximately 30 kDa. It is expressed predominantly in the fungus Ustilago sphaerogena where it plays an important role in RNA degradation. Ribonuclease U2 has been well-studied for its specific RNA cleavage mechanism which involves the recognition and catalysis of purine-rich sequences.
