The Major Egg Antigen also known as SEA or Schistosoma Egg Antigen is a glycoprotein with an estimated molecular mass of approximately 31-98 kDa depending on the glycosylation state. It is expressed within the eggs of the parasitic flatworm Schistosoma species. These parasites reside in the host's blood vessels and the antigen is significant during the egg-laying stage. It has a role in stimulating host immune responses as it interacts with immune cells.
Biological function summary

Egg-derived proteins activate and modulate the host immune system. SEA acts as an immunogenic component that influences the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses. The antigen comes from eggs in host tissues and induces granuloma formation by promoting immune cell recruitment to infected sites. Although not part of a larger complex its interactions with host immune proteins highlight its importance in disease progression due to its ability to induce a profound immune response.

Pathways

This antigen affects the immune signaling and regulatory pathways involving cytokines and immune cell receptors. Two important pathways include the T-helper 2 (Th2) cell pathway and the granulomatous inflammation pathway. SEA molecules influence the differentiation of naïve T-cells towards a Th2 response with the involvement of proteins like IL-4 and IL-13. SEA interacts with components of the host's immune response through these pathways affecting the overall modulation of immune activity.

Schistosomiasis is the primary condition connected with SEA. Granuloma formation around eggs lodged in tissues promoted by SEA can lead to fibrosis and organ dysfunction particularly in the liver and intestines. Its interaction with host immune proteins such as interleukins and tumor necrosis factor-alpha exacerbates inflammation. The dysregulation of these immune responses due to SEA aggravates disease manifestations in affected hosts.
