Streptokinase also known as SK is a bacterial protein produced by certain strains of Streptococcus bacteria. With a molecular mass of approximately 47 kDa this protein acts by activating the human plasminogen to convert into plasmin an important enzyme in the breakdown of blood clots. Streptokinase is secreted extracellularly by bacteria as part of their defense mechanism to spread infection by reducing the efficacy of blood clots which can isolate bacteria from tissues.
Biological function summary

The protein functions as a potent plasminogen activator in the fibrinolytic system. It does this by forming a complex with plasminogen facilitating the conversion to plasmin. This interaction is not part of a larger protein complex but instead centers on the proteolytic action that occurs upon binding. The activity of streptokinase is naturally regulated by its synthesis and secretion from the bacteria during infection processes.
