Cadherin-2
Developmental stage
Expressed in the heart at birth (at protein level) (PubMed:2831236). Detected in the brain and heart at 10 days of age (at protein level) (PubMed:1638632, PubMed:2831236). Expressed in the brain and heart in 10 day old embryos (PubMed:2831236).
Domain
Three calcium ions are usually bound at the interface of each cadherin domain and rigidify the connections, imparting a strong curvature to the full-length ectodomain. Calcium-binding sites are occupied sequentially in the order of site 3, then site 2 and site 1.
Function
Calcium-dependent cell adhesion protein; preferentially mediates homotypic cell-cell adhesion (PubMed:2831236). Cadherins may thus contribute to the sorting of heterogeneous cell types, and thereby play an important role during embryonic development (By similarity). Required for proper neurite branching, and pre- and postsynaptic organization (PubMed:29760652).
Tissue Specificity
Expressed at intercalated disks in the heart (at protein level).
