Uridine Phosphorylase 1

Function

Catalyzes the reversible phosphorylytic cleavage of uridine to uracil and ribose-1-phosphate which can then be utilized as carbon and energy sources or in the rescue of pyrimidine bases for nucleotide synthesis (PubMed:12077348, PubMed:15772079, PubMed:7744869). Shows broad substrate specificity and can also accept deoxyuridine and other analogous compounds (PubMed:12077348, PubMed:7744869).

Pathway

Pyrimidine metabolism; UMP biosynthesis via salvage pathway; uracil from uridine (phosphorylase route): step 1/1.

Post-translational modifications

The N-terminus is blocked.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the PNP/UDP phosphorylase family.
