    Target

    • Relevance

The endogenous agonists for the mu-opiate receptors, endomorphin-1; Tyr-Pro-Trp-Phe-NH2, and endomorphin-2; Tyr-Pro-Phe-Phe-NH2 have been reported to show hypotensive activity and Ca2+ channel current inhibitory activity [Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun.,235, 567 (1997)]. Although first identified in bovine brain, it is thought that endomorphin-1 and 2 are common mu-opiate agonists in mammals, including humans. Endomorphins may be useful for the study of pain perception together with some other biological functions in the body.

    Question

We'd like to know whether endomorphin antibodies can be used for Western blotting. Product sheet states that they have not been tested for Westerns. Do the antibodies only recognise native proteins? Cat #s are ab10285, ab10289 and ab10290

    Answer

Thank you for your enquiry. Endomorphins are 4-amino-acid peptides with molecular weight ~ 480 Daltons. Peptides with such a small weight cannot be run by western blotting - there is no such a gel that would allow retain such small peptides. Secondly, endomorphin precursor protein (large size protein that can be run by western blotting) is not known at present. Therefore, western blot application is irrelevant for antibodies against endomorphins. However, these antibodies can be used to stain proteins after electrophoresis, but what they will recognize is not clear. I hope this information helps. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any more advice or information.
