            March 18-19, 2024

            Conference Summary

This conference aims to bring experts together to discuss the molecular basis of metabolic disorders linked to overnutrition, with a particular focus on understanding human insulin resistance.

            Topics covered will include:

            • The potential roles of, altered lipid metabolism (‘lipotoxicity’), hyperinsulinaemia,  inflammation, adipokines and altered redox state  in ‘causing’ insulin resistance.
            • Insights from human genetic studies on the determinants of fat mass, distribution and metabolic disease

            Scientific Organizers

Professor Sir Stephen O'Rahilly  (Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science, Unviersity of Cambridge, UK) www.mrl.ims.cam.ac.uk/research/principal-investigators/professor-sir-stephen-orahilly/
Stephen is a Director at the MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit and Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science-Metabolic Research Laboratories, University of Cambridge.  He is also the Scientific Director of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and Head of Department of Clinical Biochemistry, University of Cambridge. His main research area is the aetiology and pathophysiology of human metabolic and endocrine disease and how such information might be used to improve the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of these diseases.

            • Professor David Savage (Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science, Unviersity of Cambridge, UK)
Having completed his medical training in South Africa, David moved to the UK in 2000 to take up a research post in Cambridge. His research has focussed on understanding the molecular pathogenesis of lipodystrophies and insulin resistance. To this end, his group engages in human, model organism and cellular studies. He is currently based at the Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science, at the University of Cambridge.
