    FXYD2, also known as FXYD domain-containing ion transport regulator 2 or Na, K-ATPase gamma subunit, belongs to a family of small membrane proteins that all contain a characteristic FXYD domain. The FXYD domain is 35 amino acids long and starts with the sequence PFXYD. FYYD2 modulates the activity of the Na, K-ATPase. Although FYXD2 is not essential for Na, K-ATPase function, it is thought to induce its activity. In human foetal astrocyte cells, the glutamate transporter EAAT1/GLAST directs FXYD2 to the cell surface, resulting in activation of the astroglial Na, K-ATPase. Mutations in the gene encoding FXYD2 are associated with renal hypomagnesaemia.
